Language Requirements

Proof of English language proficiency equivalent to a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) Level 7 for all skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking) is required for OACETT certification.  Canadian-educated applicants meet the English language proficiency requirement by graduating from a Canadian two- or three-year post-secondary engineering technology or applied science program. 

Internationally Educated Applicants  

Internationally-educated applicants may meet the English language proficiency requirement in one of three ways: 

  1. Graduate from a Canadian post-secondary engineering technology or applied science program of a minimum one-year duration. 

  2. Provide official results of a recognized standardized English language proficiency test as outlined below. Your test results can be no more than two years old. 

    As proof of your English language proficiency, you must submit an official or notarized copy of your test results if identified by the Admissions Committee as required during your file review. If you have a test result when applying, upload it during the application process.  

    Scores on any of the following recognized standardized English or French language proficiency tests will be accepted: 

    IELTS:   6.0 overall, with no less than 6.0 on each band (listening, reading, speaking, writing). 

    TOEFL iBT:  80 overall, with no less than 20 on each of the skills (listening, reading, speaking, writing) 

    CAEL:  60 overall, with no less than 50 on each band (listening, reading, speaking, writing).  

    PTE:  66 overall.  

    CELPIP: 7.0 Overall, with no less than 7.0 on each band (listening, reading, speaking, writing). 

    TEF-Canada Reading score 207-232, Writing score 310-348, Listening score 249-279, Speaking score 310-348.

    TCF-Canada: Reading score 453-498, Writing score 10-11, Listening score 458-502, Speaking score 10-11.

    Scores on the following standardized English language proficiency tests will NOT be accepted:   

    • Paper-based or computer-based TOEFL
    • CLBA
    • CLBPT
    • MELAB
    • CPE
    • CAE
    • FCE
    • TOIEC 


  3. Graduate from a program equivalent to a two- or three-year Ontario post-secondary engineering technology or applied science program, administered and instructed in English, in one of the following countries:
