The Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists

OACETT Update from President Kim Pickett, C.E.T., LET

First and foremost, I hope this message finds everyone well and ask that we all find ways to help support our loved ones during the uncertain period ahead.

These are challenging times for all of us, especially those on the front lines responding to the COVID-19 virus. So let’s do our part to recognize the hard work of the front line workers who keep the daily necessities of our lives functioning.

The Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) is monitoring COVID-19 and its impact on travel, meetings and events. Health and safety, and serving you our member are our top priorities. Due to the recent circumstances including the provincial state of emergency, travel restrictions and an unknown length of time the virus may be with us, we have made the decision to continue with our Annual General Meeting scheduled for May 30, 2020 via digital means. As the AGM is a requirement of the Canadian Not-For-Profit Corporations Act, OACETT is legally obliged to deliver this meeting within particular time constraints.

Additionally, we have made the difficult decision to reschedule the conference portion to the fall: October 29 – 31, 2020. This decision is based on the best information we have at this time regarding the forecasted length of the COVID-19 virus within the community and to eliminate any potential contractual financial penalties your association may incur due to any late cancellations.

As most of you are aware, on Tuesday March 24 at 11:59 p.m., the Ontario Premier ordered all non-essential businesses in the province to shut down. This is a significant escalation in the fight to slow the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. While the OACETT office was already closed as a health precaution, it will remain closed until further direction from the Premier. As staff do not have access to regular mail service, we encourage all members to communicate and interact with us through online means, and staff will reply to you in a timely fashion. Please refer to our website for particular contacts.

As we face uncertainty, I would like to acknowledge the hard work of the OACETT staff as they continue to respond to the concerns and needs of members while they adopt new work from home measures. OACETT continues to function remotely, and our primary goal is to continue to provide the services that make your association an essential part of your life. Please stay tuned for regular updates from me!

I encourage everyone to practice social distancing. Take care of yourselves and your families, and most importantly, look out for one another.

Stay well and best regards,

Kim Pickett, C.E.T., LET
OACETT President
