The Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists

Three and Six Year Certification Rule

Since July 2005, OACETT has assigned certification timelines to all Associate members in order to ensure they would continue on to certification. Members are either given three years to certify or six years to certify if further academics are required. After January 1st 2016, certification timelines were made mandatory, and failure to certify would result in a loss of OACETT membership. But now, as of September 2018, OACETT Council has decided not to revoke the membership of Associate members who do not meet their certification timelines. Instead, members who fail to certify will be granted a 6 month grace period. Once that grace period has expired, the Associate member will be assigned a CPD cycle, just like all certified members, in order to maintain their professional competency. Failure to meet CPD requirements will put continued OACETT membership at risk.

OACETT Council's decision not to revoke membership when certification timelines expire does not extend to road construction designations. Therefore, when a certification timeline expires, road construction designations are removed and cannot be earned again until certification is achieved. This means that if you are an Associate OACETT member with a road construction designation (rcji, rcsi, rcca) and your timeline expires, you will be assigned a CPD cycle and lose your road construction designation. See the Road Construction Designation Application and Guide for more information.

Did you join OACETT between July 1 2005 and January 1 2016? Read on to see how your timeline is affected.

Three Year Timeline
Members assigned three years to certify from July 1, 2005 through December 31, 2015, must comply with mandatory certification by January 1, 2019. Those not in compliance will be given a six months' grace period to certify. Those still failing to certify will be assigned a CPD cycle.

Six Year Timeline: Joined Between July 1, 2005 and December 31, 2013
Members given six years to certify between July 1, 2005 and December 31, 2013, must be able to demonstrate progress towards certification by January 1, 2019. Progress is defined as completing one required course or the PPE/IEPPE. If some progress can be shown, a new compliance date of January 1, 2022 will be assigned to complete the certification program. If no progress can be shown, a six months' grace period will be given to complete the PPE/IEPPE. Failure to comply will result in the assignment of a CPD cycle.

Six Year Timeline: Joined Between January 1, 2014 and December 31, 2015
For members given six years to certify between January 1, 2014 and December 31, 2015, the original compliance dates of 2020 and 2021 will be extended until January 1, 2022. Those not in compliance will be given a six months' grace period. Those still failing to certify will be assigned a CPD cycle.
