Associate Member Associate membership is a "pre-certified" level of membership. This category includes new applicants and others who are in the process of completing the requirements for certification.
Certified Member

Certified membership is the level of membership that signifies the member has completed all of the requirements for certification. These members are identified by one of the titles below.

  • C.E.T. - Certified Engineering Technologist
  • A.Sc.T. - Applied Science Technologist
  • C.Tech. - Certified Technician

Currently, OACETT's membership comprises about 14,000 certified members and 6,000 associate members who are in the process of completing their requirements for certification.

Preconditions of Membership

To apply for membership, applicants must first meet the three preconditions set out by the OACETT Act. Applicants must be:

Certification

Most applicants begin their membership in the associate category. In order to become fully certified, three additional standards are applied. They are:

Academics OACETT examiners evaluate an individual's education and/or training using a recognized national standard. Each discipline of technology has a curriculum that is used by all provincial certifying bodies in Canada. If the the individual's training does not meet the national standard, a program of technical examinations is assigned and must be completed before certification is granted.

In cases where no diploma was obtained, such as military or other company training programs, this training is evaluated and an examination program is usually assigned.

Work experience Each applicant must have at least two years of appropriate work experience. For applicants with experience abroad, at least one year must be completed in Canada to demonstrate that the applicant has applied local codes, standards and practices. Work experience must be verified in writing by at least two former employers/supervisors.
Professional practice
guidelines
Before certification is granted, applicants must successfully complete the OACETT Professional Practice Examination. This examination is designed to ensure that the individual is aware of the legal and ethical responsibility that comes with performing their work. Protection of public safety is paramount. A certified member has made a commitment to abide by OACETT's code of ethical conduct.
