CPD Workshop: Closeout of a Construction Project

Why would a Contractor, Owner Consultant or Subcontractor need to know Best Practices for closing out a construction project? The answer is simple – if you can’t get it done then you can’t reach Substantial Performance. If Clients are not able to use the facility as intended, then all involved will have to spend more time and money to wrap it up and all stakeholders’ payments will be delayed. Getting a project to Substantial Performance and then to Total Performance are two of the most difficult milestones in the construction process to achieve.

CPD Workshop: Construction Execution Plan

Effective and thorough project planning prior to commencement of work on a new site is essential to the overall success of any construction project. Often focus is mainly directed at winning the work and a rush to start the job, rarely is there adequate time given to taking the time and planning the work in advance.

This seminar will discuss the elements of creating an efficient and organized Construction Execution Plan which includes: understanding scope, contractual requirements and budget, assigning the best project team, site logistics, sequence of work, schedule, project resources and identifying risk and opportunity etc.. The Construction Execution Plan should effectively communicate, in simple language, the sequence of events required to construct the project and to meet key milestones. Once complete, it can be used to provide information to others about how the project will be managed and constructed, and as a “road map” for the project team members to identify how the project will be constructed.

In addition, participants will be engaged in creating a plan using “Project Milestone Planning”. At the start of a construction project the project team will identify certain “milestone” dates to regroup to assess the success of the Construction Execution Plan to that point, what is working, what is not and to revisit the Plan for the work to be accomplished to the next milestone.

CPD Webinar:  Theory to Application – A Virtual Air Barrier/ Dynamic Buffer Zone Application to a Large Office Building

Presented by: Building Envelope Council Ottawa Region (BECOR)

Historic buildings in Canada are often 100 years old or more. Some of these buildings continue to provide occupancy but the indoor conditions are often not up to modern expectations. To be acceptable these buildings need to support an adequate indoor temperature, relative humidity, indoor air quality as well as controlled building pressure. They are most often upgraded mechanically with new ventilation, heating cooling and winter humidification. These upgrades create new building envelope loads with risks of wall and roof condensation. These new loads can and do damage expensive restoration in very short order.

Enter a new technology for the protection of a heritage building envelope, specifically, the application of a virtual air barrier and dynamic buffer zone (VAB/DBZ) concept. The VAB/DBZ concept involves the light pressurization of the building envelope cavity with dry winter air to prevent leakage of moist indoor air into the cavity, avoiding condensation related damage. The VAB/DBZ concept was recently applied to a large office building in Regina Saskatchewan. The building was originally built in 1913 for the C. W. Sherwood Co. Ltd. It is now the Viterra Building and the lower building of the Viterra complex. It was designated as a heritage building by the City of Regina.

Presented by: Rick Quirouette, B. Arch is a senior building science specialist with almost four decades of experience in building science and technology. He is a life member of the Alberta Building Envelope Council (ABEC) and a past-president of the National Building Envelope Council (NBEC).

CPD Webinars:  Virtual Building Science Insight Presentations

Presented by: International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants

The presentations will be live one-hour interactive sessions followed by a thirty-minute Q&A period.

Presentation 1: What is New and Old in CSA A123.21 - 2020?

CSA A123.21 is the “Standard Test Method for the Dynamic Wind Uplift Resistance of Membrane Roofing Systems”.  It has been used by the roofing community since 2004. Its origin goes back to 1994 when Special Interest Group for Dynamic Evaluation of Roofing System (SIGDERS) started to develop a dynamic load cycle testing procedure. CSA A123.21 is better replication of the true effect of wind on the roof, while also accounting for variations in roofing components and materials. Furthermore, the failure modes obtained from CSA A123.21 are similar to the field failure modes after high wind events.

This webinar will present a brief history of how CSA A123.21 has evolved through the years and how it is codified.  Local case studies pertinent to the presenting geographical region will be included. Applicability of building code and professional judgement of designers will be discussed.

Presentation 2: Lessons Learned from SIDGER's R&D - Paractical Design Extracts

The Special Interest Group for Dynamic Evaluation of Roofing System (SIGDERS) at NRC has been evaluating roofing systems over the last two decades. SIGDERS’s generic precompetitive research benefiting all of its membership while also tackling the challenges encountered by the industry pertaining to all elements of the roofing system. SIGDERS operation is one of its kind in the world not only for its legacy of a long lasting R&D consortia but also the several impacts it created for the Roofing community.

This webinar will summarize the lessons learned throughout the years on how to optimize the wind resistance of low slope membrane roofing systems. By taking the “weakest link” concept of a resistance chain, the importance role that each element of a roofing system plays in the overall performance of the system will be demonstrated. Local case studies pertinent to the presenting geographical region will be included. Segment of the presentation will focus on the new NRC’s climate adaptation standard.

Presented by: Dr. Baskaran, Group Leader at the National Research Council of Canada
Dates and times: Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Local case studies pertinent to the presenting geographical region will be included along with local expert panel.

Regardless of the industry and the market we nurture, we all receive two different “paycheques”.
