Careers in Engineering/Applied Science Technology
Engineering and applied science technologists and technicians work in the engineering field with engineers, tradespeople and scientists.
To prepare for their careers, they graduate from a two- or three-year college diploma program for engineering technicians or technologists. These programs focus on hands-on engineering technology skills compared to the more theoretical education in a university engineering program. Some graduate from a technical institute or university. Many colleges now offer applied degree programs in technology fields and these graduates get a combination of theoretical and hands-on education.
Graduates of engineering and applied science technology and technician programs work in these disciplines of engineering:
- civil
- building
- geomatics
- chemical
- bio-science
- electrical
- electronics
- computer
- mechanical
- industrial
- resources
- mining
- geological
- environmental
- forestry
Some careers that engineering/applied science technicians and technologists choose are:
- project management
- maintenance-engineering supervision
- quality analysis, testing and inspection
- design engineering
- research
- manufacturing
- high-tech electronics
Most positions are with the private sector, government and utilities. Engineering technicians and technologists also work as private consultants and in education.
